The first recorded discovery of Andros was in 1550 while the Spanish were searching for slave labor. By 1787, 1,400 inhabitants of St. Andreas Island had found new homes on Andros. Although no one knows for sure, the name Andros is believed to be in honor of Sir Edmund Andros, Commander of His Majesty's Forces.
Andros' waters are well known to scuba divers and snorkelers, thanks to the third-longest barrier reef in the world. The island currently stands as the bonefishing capital of the world.
